Business Planning is not enough for your success

If you’re new around these parts, you probably don’t know that I have a tendency to balk at conventional online business practices.  And that I find most online marketing (no matter how effective) to be a form of sleaseball tango. As such, I write a lot about slaying the conventional wisdom.  So if you’re new, welcome!  If you’re not new, you’ll be happy to know this is one of those smackdowns you love so much.  😉

So, let’s talk business planning

How many emails have you received this month telling you how and why to plan out your upcoming year?  How many blog posts have you read laying out their strategic goal setting algorithm that guarantees you an extra 100k in revenue?  Each of those emails/blogs probably ask you to think strategically about your annual plan. Many of them include downloads for you to plan plan plan.  Branded, gorgeous downloads.

If your email box is anything like mine, you probably have seen at least a dozen.  If not more.

And while planning has it’s merits, the truth is…

Planning in and of itself isn’t enough.  (Tweet it)

You’re probably reading this and looking at it like I’m a crazy person.

“Makenna!  You’re a business strategist!  Your entire business is built on planning for others!” you’re saying to yourself.

And while that is entirely true.  I have a secret for you.  One that may ruffle some feathers.  Planning, all by its lonesome, is bullshit.  Yup, I said it.

That isn’t to say that planning is bad!  No no no!  Planning is so very important.  But business planning doesn’t take into account the real world.  Life, business shifts, new opportunities, failed launches.  All those plans required pivots. And fast.

The best laid plans often get derailed.

Ask anyone.  Case in point:  In 2015, I was supposed to still live in Texas, launch three group programs focused on relationship marketing, finish writing a book, and remodel a kitchen.

But thanks to a wrench in the works:  we sold our house (for a profit), moved to Colorado, and I completely reworked my business strategy for 2015 to be more sustainable and focused.

So what can you do to make sure your plan doesn’t fall upon deaf intention and is nimble?

First of all, plan with soul and intention.

Map out what you think you want to offer/achieve/create in the coming year.  Set the intention that these things will occur.  BUT, be ready to pivot if need be.  Know that plans are there to set the stage for action, but action is still required to make plans come to fruition.  Be ready to shift at any time, even if it was a dream of yours.

Note:  Shifting doesn’t equate failure.

Even if you do fill out every single planning worksheet, remember that the best laid plans often go to waste.  As soulful business owners we plan to set intention for the year to come, not to engage in guarantees.  (Tweet it)

What’s even more important than planning?  Taking care of yourself.

That means loving into your body through movement and eating well and for energy. Refocusing your energy to places that serve you. Being transparent with yourself and your team (if you have one) about things in your plan that don’t serve you or your company anymore. Building a practice of mindfulness through movement, meditation, etc.  And making sure you have a clear mindset without any soul crushing mind demons yammering in your brain so you can grow with grace and make this upcoming year the best year ever.
